Face is a complicated structure that several configurations are originated and integrated each other during the developmental stages. Almost the whole of face is formed by neural crest cells migrating from the edge of the cranial neural folds to the pharingeal arcus. The face development is under the inductive effects of the organizing centers of prosencephalon and rhombencephalon.Brain is an assimetric organ both functionally and anatomically. When considering the functional asymmetry of brain hemispheres, while the left hemisphere is dominant in processing the verbal, mathematical and logical informations, the right hemisphere is dominant in processing the perceptual, visible, spatial and artistic informations. The functional differences in the left and right brain hemispheres might also cause differences in facial regions developing from the same centers embryologically just like telencephalon. Therefore the present study aimed to find out the designation of face types and hand choises along with the consideration of sex differences in college students from mathematics and painting departments by the application of linear anthropometric measurements.The total number of 212 students from the Faculty of Education, Cumhuriyet University, Sivas, Turkey were included in the present study. While 80 of students were from Painting Department, the rest 132 were from Mathematics department. A total number of 22 measurements from 17 anthropometric points for each student were done.The study findings revealed that there were statistically significant differences between two sudent groups in the face width, interchantal distance, mandibular width, nose width, upper lip height and philtrum length. There were more both handed and left handed students in Painting Department than the Mathematics Department. Without the discrimination of departments, the comparison of genders revealed that there statistically significant differences between all measurements except the left eye width, forehead heights I and II parameters. All measurements except the right eye width were found to be higher in males than females. In addition, all students from both departments had Euryprosepe face type when average face type points were compared.Those differences might be related to the functional asymmetry of brain. Therefore it could be suggested that the functional asymmetry of brain could cause an asymmetry in face as well as in the linear anthropometric measurements.

Yüz, embriyolojik olarak birçok yapının orjin aldığı ve birbiri ile entegre olarak geliştiği kompleks bir yapıdır. Yüzün tamamına yakını cranial nöral kıvrımların kenarından pharyngeal arkuslara göç eden krest hücreleri tarafından oluşturulur. Yüz gelişimi prosencephalonu ve rhombencephalonu organize edici merkezlerin indüktif etkisi altındadır.Beyin hem fonksiyonel hem de anatomik olarak asimetriktir. Beyin yarım kürelerinin fonksiyonel asimetrisine bakıldığında sol yarım kürenin sözel, matematiksel, mantıksal bilgiyi işlemede, sağ yarım kürenin de algısal, dikkat çekici, uzaysal, bütüncül, artistik bilgiyi işlemede dominant olduğu görülür. Beynin sağ ve sol yarısının fonksiyonel olarak farklı olması, tıpkı telencephalon gibi embriyolojik olarak aynı merkezlerden gelişen yüz bölgesinde de farklılıklara yol açmaktadır. Bundan dolayı çalışmamızda resim bölümü öğrencileri ile matematik bölümü öğrencilerinde yüzün lineer antropometrik ölçümlerini yapıp, bölümlere göre cinsiyet farkını da göz önüne alarak bu bölümlerdeki yüz tipleri ile el tercihlerini belirlemeyi amaçladık.Çalışmamıza Cumhuriyet Üniversitesi Eğitim Fakültesinden toplam 212 öğrenci dahil edildi. Bu öğrencilerden 80'i resim öğretmenliği bölümünden 132'si orta öğretim matematik öğretmenliği bölümünden seçildi. 17 antropometrik noktadan yararlanılarak her bir öğrencide 22 adet ölçüm yapıldı.Bu doğrultuda çalışma sonuçlarımıza bakıldığında birbirinden yetenek olarak farklı bireylerden oluşan iki bölüm arasındaki ölçümlerde yüz genişliği, intercanthal mesafe, mandibular genişlik, burun genişliği, üst dudak yüksekliği ve philtrum uzunluğunda istatistiksel olarak anlamlı fark mevcuttu. Resim bölümü öğrencileri arasında, matematik bölümü öğrencilerine göre daha fazla sayıda iki elli ve solak öğrenci vardı. Bölümlere ayrım olmadan, cinsiyete göre bir karşılaştırma yapıldığında sol göz genişliği, alın yüksekliği I ve alın yüksekliği II parametrelerinin ölçüm sonuçları hariç değerlerin tümü kadın ve erkekler arasında anlamlı bulundu. Sağ göz genişliği hariç tüm parametrelerin ölçüm değeri erkeklerde daha yüksekti. Aynı zamanda resim ve matematik bölümündeki öğrencilerin ortalama yüz tipi puanları bölümler arasında karşılaştırıldığında, her iki grupta da Euryprosepe yüz tipi hakimdi.Bu farklar beynin fonksiyonel asimetrisi ile ilişkili olabilir. Bu sebeple beynin fonksiyonel asimetrisinin yüzde bir asimetriye yol açmasının yanı sıra lineer antropometrik ölçümlerde de farka yol açabileceğini düşünmekteyiz.
