In the past, the growth and transformation of cities and communities used to be the paramount pointof focus in most urban debates. But in recent times, there has been this gradual shift into the idea of sustainability - such that the United Nations General Assembly included sustainable cities andcommunities as one of the sustainable development goals. The rise in focus towards this direction, results from the rise in urban population over the past decades, rise in city slums as well as a rise in environmental degradation in cities. Due to these, most states have resulted into erecting skyscraper cities with aim to solve these problems, but this seems to be failing. Actually, cities play a very major role towards uplifting the sociocultural, economic and ecological wellbeing of the entire society or state. In this regard, the above three factors and the interest of the future generation needs to be considered in the creation of cities. However, this study opens up with introductory statements, and puts forth other ideas with regards to cities both globally and locally. It continues by bringing out reasonable views that can be applied in sustaining a city or community. And furthermore presents the growth and transformation history of the Bamenda city with regards to space, and local administration. In this length, it takes into consideration aspects like: migration, colonialism as well as urban sprawl which happens to be the key triggering factors of Bamenda's current spatial distribution. Nonetheless, this study goes ahead to ascertain the sustainability level of the Bamenda city with the aid of statistical information collected from the field. Finally, it ends up with recommendations for the city of Bamenda and other enriching lessons for theory and practice on how to improve the creation of sustainable cities both in Cameroon and in other countries across the world.
