From I-IVth century until now Volga-Ural region is a dorm of many Turkic tribes. In XVth century after the collapse of the Golden Horde, its land was divided into big, great and unequal khanates. One of them was the Nogay Horde. The borders of the Nogay Horde (Mangit Yurdu) completly took a place in the XVIth century. The state is bordered by Volga river in the west and Irtysh and Tobola rivers in the east. South borders were Syrdarya river and Aral sea pass through Karakum area and extend to the Caspian Sea in the north-east. Although, sometimes the northern border is considered to be the south of the Kama river, it is more correct to say that it was area from Samara river to Ufa and Ay River. However the borders of the Nogay Horde were not invariable, Nogays were a nomadic society, that was the reason behind the constant change of borders over time. For example, after the collapse of the Great Horde, the Nogay Horde expanded to the right side of the Volga river. The first half of XVIth century was a `golden age` of Nogay Horde. The population was estimated by 700-900 thousand during this period. In Russian sources they were called `Nogay Tatars`. Probably, this name was given to separate them from other Tatars (Kazan, Crimea, Astrakhan). Because the Nogais often called themselves `Mangit`. Some historians suppose that at the Musa's period the Mangit Yurdu was completly turned into the Nogay Horde.Since the Nogay Horde was a nomadic state, it owned a community that lived on livestock. The reason for this can be seen in the geography of the area in which they lived in. Most of the lands were steppes. However, in small amounts there were horticulture and agriculture. In the XVIth century the Nogay Horde played an important role in the foreign policy. They had evolving relationship with Siberia, Kazan, Astrakhan, Kazakh, Crimean Khanates. At the history sources it is seen that the Nogay Horde also had intense relations with `great` states of that time, like the Ottoman Empire and Russia. The relations betweeen the Nogay Horde and Ottoman Empire is the most interesting part of this thesis. Turkey was always seen as a `big brother`, however, the far distance between them prevented their communication. As a result the Ottoman Empire communicated through Crimean Khanate as a intermediator. Although, this state did not last for a long period of time, according to the history, it was one of the most important periods for the Turkic communities, who are still living in the Volga-Ural region until now. In the century and a half in which Nogay Horde existed the cultural, political and social features of Turkic communities were established. Keywords: Nogay Horde, Mangıt Yurdu, Nogais, Ottoman Empire, Ottoman-Nogay relations, Crimean Khanate, Turkic states, Volga-Ural region.
