Özet

The study below is a research on the roles and mutual relations of gender and education in the ancient ages that witnessed the emergence and development of civilization. The subject of education is such a major theme of our study due to the role education plays in shaping social life and thought. The first half of our study examines the emergence and development of gender, patriarchy and civilization, the evolution of education in this process and the mainstream patriarchal systems and philosophies of education. The second half of our study focuses on the philosophical currents whose views on gender were different from the dominant tendencies of civilization, the members of these currents, their evolution and their philosophies of education. Among the main purposes of our study is to demonstrate that gender is built not on a biological basis but socially. From a perspective of social gender, gender roles shaped by education are extremely contingent, fragile and variable and there are considerable differences between ancient schools' educational approaches. Thus our study examines the situations and positions of gender roles in various currents and attempts to establish that gender is not a given but a constructed category and that the patriarchal worldview affirms itself via such categories.
