Smoking causes airways pathologies by disturbing oxidant/antioxidant balance. It was reported that fruit consumption may prevent the adverse effects of cigarette smoke on lung functions. In addition, chronic exercise has been shown to stimulate antioxidant systems. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of smoking, fruit consumption and physical activity on lung functions in young females. This study was carried out on 300 healthy females aged 18-78 years. Smoking, physical activity and fruit consumption characteristics of the subjects were determined with an inquiry. Vital capacity (VC), forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1), FEV1/VC, FEV1/FVC, peak expiratory flow (PEF) and forced expiratory flow between 25% and 75% of forced vital capacity (FEF25-75) were measured using Pony Spirometry (Cosmed S.r.l.).The subjects were divided into 4 smoking groups; non-smokers (n= 62), passive smokers (n= 167), light smokers (pack year < 5; n= 51) and heavy smokers (pack year ? 5; n= 18). According to the amount of fruit consumption four [less (n= 48), moderate (n= 68), normal (n= 123) and high (n= 59)], and, according to their weekly walking times (WT), five groups [inactive (WT= 0; n= 66), less active (0 < WT ? 120 hours/week; n= 79), moderately active (120 < WT ? 240 hours/week; n=57), normally active (240 < WT ? 360 hours/week; n= 30) and highly active (WT > 360 hours/week; n= 66)] were made up. The mean FEV1/FVC and FEF25-75 values of heavy smokers were significantly lower than those of the non-, passive and light smokers. It was found that as the consumption increases the PFT values except FEV1/FVC increase, but it was not significant. There was no difference between exercise groups in terms of PFT values. In conclusion, smoking has a reducing effect on lung functions even in young subjects. Because this effect is dose-dependent, light smokers may be asymptomatic. Therefore, it is important to quit smoking especially for asymptomatic smokers whose pack years were low.
