Özet

In the first chapter of this study, I have investigated the social, cultural and economic situation of Afghanistan, while I have examined in the second chapter the history of religious education in Afghanistan (until the year 1994), addressing the pre-Islamic and Islamic periods. In the third chapter, I have studied the period from 1994 up to the present time. Since Afghanistan is located in a strategically important region, it has come under many foreign attacks throughout history. Therefore, the country is the center and host of various cultures and beliefs. In Afghanistan, an underdeveloped country in economical and social aspects, educational institutions have failed to reach an adequate level. Rate of literacy is very low in the country in which the great majority of the population has been living in rural areas.Religious education institutions in Afghanistan are divided into two: the formal and the informal. The latter are the schools of Qur?an, big traditional religious schools, i.e., the madrasas, and mosques, all of them being financially supported and maintained by the people, whereas the former are those big madrasas which are administered by the Ministry of Education as well as the religious high schools known as Dar al-Huffaz. There are also Theology Schools which are administered by the Ministry of Higher Education as well as the compulsory courses of religion and culture in other institutions of higher education.
