As a result of the industrialization, a rapid migration began from rural areas to cities. The urbanization process, which accelerated with the need for housing resulting from the increasing migration to the cities, caused the cities to develop uncontrolled. In our country, the concept of urban transformation has emerged in the 1950s with the aim of finding a solution to the distorted construction and unhealthy housing production in the city. With the increase in the demand for housing in the cities, the green areas that should be the result of the acceleration of the construction have been destroyed. For this reason, green roof applications for solving the need for green areas in urban centers have become a trend in many ever-developing and developed countries to solve the problem. Green roof applications, besides ecological, aesthetic purposes, provide spaces which usage as activity area and living area where people can easily reach in proximity to people living in cities. In this study, the concept of sustainable urban transformation developed in parallel with the progress in the world is discussed. Accordingly, the development process of green roof systems from past to present will be investigated and the main components of green roof design and application processes will be presented. Then, the green roof samples were analyzed from Turkey and other countries selected and examined in detail. In the scope of the study, the design and implementation process of the green roof systems in Kaya Palas Apartment, which is selected as an exemplary project in Kadıköy district, was examined and the impact and contributions of the project on sustainable urban transformation projects were evaluated. As a result of the study; The intended use of green roofs, their ecological, economic and social advantageous aspects, the problems encountered in their use and the suggestions for solutions to these problems were evaluated. Recommendations for the development of projects with green roof applications on sustainable urban transformation that will bring added value to the city are presented.
