This study aims to understand how the various Turkish right wing fractions define the Alevis and how influential this way of definition towards their attitude to the Alevis. In the 1960's and 1970's throughout the world the processes of politisation gathered pace, the social opposition rallied, the social mobilisation became intense with the impact of ideological polarisations and correspondingly social schism became more and more visible. Concurrently, in this historical period the Alevis got involved in the politisation process by affliating with the leftist movements and therefore attracted the rightwingers's attentions. In this vein, this study places emphasis on examining the Alevi perception of the Turkish right wing between the period 1960-1980. In this period, which is a significant episod of the Turkish political life, the basic source of motivation of the Turkish right wing that brought together different fractions of the Turkish right ideology grounding on religion, nation and tradition was anti-communism due to the Cold War. In this context, the most significant parameter shaping the Turkish rigth wing's perception of Alevi was anti-communism and the fact that the Alevis established rapport with the leftists from the 1960's and with the social democrat CHP in the 1970's led to the left-communism-Alevism association and drawing of an analogy between the red of communism and the redhead of (kızılbaş) of Alevism. The anti-communism emphasis became a central issue within the political discourse of the Turkish right wing while the Alevis were critisized for becoming spare part of the left by virtue of their relations with the leftist movements. Therefore, they were considered as elements having the potential of threatening continuity of the state. In this research, the Turkish right wing's discourses and practices towards the Alevis, who were caught between being the Kızılbaş [qizilbash, redhead] rebels of the Ottoman past and being the authentical representatives of the Turkishness of the Republic Period.
