Work as an aspect of human nature is central to the human experience. However, the meaning and nature of work has varied throughout history depending on society's modes of production. Since the rise of the modern capitalism, work has been conceptualized as employment. Both the limitations of the modern work concept and the changing nature of work itself have been criticized by classical sociologists as well as by late modern theorists. In these senses, the term `end of work` is comprised of the critical approaches to work as a defence of human free will, desire, libidinal productivity and other creative forces. The purpose of this thesis is to critically evaluate the meaning and the role of work in a historical context. By following and comparing the end of work idea in social theories, this dissertation aims to trigger a philosophical debate on work concepts that contribute to the thought of work as an autonomous and free human activity. End of work theories prior to the post-industrial period focused primarily on alienation of workers while criticizing the characteristics of modern work and idealizing a superior type of work that reflected human existence. Nevertheless, both technological advances and the neoliberal globalization process in the 1990s have reframed the basis of the end-of-work debate. Rather than liberating people from the boundaries of necessities, the end of work has come to mean precariousness. Therefore, critical perspectives on employment that claim alternative ways to organize human productivity are now more important than ever.
