Meaning is not just one of the main subjects of literature, but many disciplines. Meaning, which enters into the study area of many disciplines such as logic, philosophy, sociology and psychology, has not entered into the boundaries of a frame which has achieved certainty. Thus, it has been taken as a basic problematic and scrutinized within the scope of different approaches. Meaning, which has maintained its place as a significant problematic especially in the literary context, has been taken as a extensive issue in the poetic mediation. The poetry's problematic of meaning has been scrutinized by different theories and critical understandings, however it has not been rendered a universal characteristics. Although meaning is one of the elements that form the poetry, it has been placed into the privileged position as it directly influences all other elements. The problematic of meaning in poetry has become a matter of discussion in the context of many characteristics of poetry such as essence-form, image, reality, language, communitarianism and individualism. The problematic of meaning, to which the modern Turkish poetry generally approaches by relating the poetry with those elements, has created different results according to the periods and poets. It is necessary to indicate that in the early years of the Turkish Republic, the poets have not drawn a universal frame to the problematic of meaning. However, despite the fact that every poet has moved in the direction of his/her own understanding of meaning, they have pointed out that the poetic meaning could be fulfilled by the intuitional perception. Ahmet Haşim's bringing of meaning to the sound by the `nightingale metaphor – bülbül istiaresi`, Yahya Kemal's explanation of it by the `inner harmony – deruni ahenk`, Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar's mentioning of the `mood of poetry – şiirin havası`, Necip Fazıl's pointing out of the `absolute truth – mutlak hakikat` and the tacitness and understanding that prioritizes music of other poets of the period, who had been influenced by symbolism, all correspond to this intuitional meaning. It has to be noted that Nâzım Hikmet, as the only different poet of the period, had diverted towards a more rational meaning and sided with the realist poetical meaning. And in between the years of 1940 and 1955, it is possible to say that this conception of meaning was abandoned. Meaning has been brought to a clearer and concrete plane rather than a mysterious and abstract structure. The poetry of the period, which is located closer to the basic meaning conception and prioritizes the meaning, has brought the meaning to the position of primary element of poetry. In this period, where the Birinci Yeni (The First New) poetry has been generally influential, the poetic meaning was overlapped with the social life. However, the big split that has taken place in poetry in 1955 and the period afterwards have made the meaning implicit in poetry and pushed it aside. This undersdanding, which prioritizes implicit meaning, imagery, poetic language and connotation, has objected making meaning the basic element of poetry. Despite the fact that the poetry of this period, which is called as the İkinci Yeni (The Second New), was blamed for lack of meaning, it is not possible to say that the poets acted with this type of intention and purpose. Those poets, who valued meaning, however did not consider it the sine qua non of poetry, have defended the existence, imagery, individual values, aporias of the individual in poetry and expression of all of these in the language and style that the poetry requires. The rejection of meaning in this period is for presenting a new poetical meaning. Thus, in any period of the modern Turkish poetry, poetry has not defended meaninglessness as a whole and has not given examples of it. If we assume that the words that form the poetry carry a meaning before the poetry and the poetry is composed of those words, a poetry which has achieved integrity may not be expected to lack meaning. However, beyond all of these, it is not possible to say that poetry corresponds to a definite meaning and it may be presented with a logic whose boundaries were drawn. The poetical meaning, before everything, only resides inside the related poetry and it belongs to the poetry.
