The issue of National Theatre is widely discussed in terms of the relationship between Turkish Theatre and Western Theatre without questioning the concept of nationality itself. In this work, the tools that will show the place of the representation of East/West dichotomy and the imagination of nation in Turkish Theatre are investigated. A critical reading of the studies focusing that interaction led this thesis to scrutinize the relationship between Occidentalism and definitions of theatre. In this context, imagination of a national theatre which reconstructs Western/Eastern dichotomy while also reshaping the way theater is defined are explored through definitions of theatre in different periods. The definitions of theatre are analyzed firstly in the works which were written in the early years of Turkish Republic and secondly in the writings about the figure of Brecht. While the tendencies at the foundation of Occidentalism-Turkish Theater relationship are traced in the works of Ertuğrul and Baltacıoğlu, the strategies to connect these tendencies with the ways of defining theater are also explored. The transformations and continuities of these strategies, especially in the definitions and works in regards of Brecht, are exemplified in the articles of Nutku and Nekimken and in Akan?s play ?Analık Davası?. Departing from differences and commonalities of definitions of two separate periods, strategies are offered to approach the ways of defining and understanding that are imprisoned or are formed around West/East problem. The study concludes with a proposal for a dramaturgy approach framed with these strategies.
