BACKGROUND: Puberty is a complex developmental process in which sexualmaturity is gained. It is thought that the signals that stimulate the restrained neurohypophysealaxis during childhood are secreted after the body fat ratio reaches a certain level. İrisin issecreted from skeletal muscle and fat tissue and increases at the onset of puberty. In this studyit is aimed to discover the relationship between serum irisin level and the onset of puberty andstages of puberty; with the obtained data aiming to light the pubertal physiology and thepathogenesis of pubertal disorders.METHODS: A total of 150 healthy and normal-weight girls (30 for each pubertalstage) were included in the study. Heights, weights and body mass indexes of the cases weremeasured; routine blood tests and serum irisin levels were analysed.RESULTS: It was found that a significantly negative correlation between irisin leveland decimal age in all cases (r = -0,222; p <0,01). Stage 2 and stage 3 were found to besignificantly high from stage 1 in irisin levels (p=0.017, p=0.017, respectively). The level ofirisin in stage 3 according to stage 2 was significantly high (p = 0,041). Levels of irisin instage 3 were higher than in stage 4 and stage 5 (p = 0.001, p = 0.001, respectively). There wasno significant difference between stage 4 and stage 5 irisin levels (p = 0.836). Up to stage 3,irisin levels showed a rise and then fell to a lower level. There was no significant relationshipbetween irisin level and height SDS, weight SDS and BMI SDS levels in all cases and interms of puberty stages.CONCLUSION: The level of irisin increased significantly from prepubertal topubertal transition. After irisin levels reached to the highest values in stages 2 and 3, wherethe rate of growth was highest, it tended to fall in stages 4 and 5. This suggests that it may bean indicator of the rate of growth and the onset of puberty.
