In the present-day world, where the value given to human life is constantly increasing, the concept of safety is one that has matured as a result of saddening incidents and experiences. Rooted in various theoretical assessments and conclusions, the concept has become prevalent in nearly every aspect of daily life. In this context, the implementation in recent years of the International Safety Management (ISM) in the maritime sector has led to noticeable changes in the approach towards the concept of safety for commercial ships weighing 500 Gross Ton and more. However, for ships that outside the scope of the ISM, practices have continued to vary according to the flag state. As a result of this, the concept safety for such commercial ships have remained limited to rules governing occupational safety and responsibility behavior towards nature, and the number of accidents in touristic boats and private boats have not decreased. For this reason, it has become necessary to investigate and develop the concept of safety for boats used in tourism. The touristic boat tour industry is one of the sectors in which the highly competitive market conditions brought by an increasingly globalized world have had the most effect. As a result, economic concerns have often taken precedence over the concept of safety in this sector. For this reason, research and development activities are being conducted on the field of safety by experts in many different countries, and the concept of `safe life` is gradually becoming a national strategy. As a country surrounded by the sea on three sides, Turkey needs to maintain its sea tourism capacity at the highest level. In this context, this study was performed with the aim of investigating the adequacy of sea tourism activities in Turkey with regards to the safe life concept, and to increase situational awareness on this subject. In addition to performing a review of the literature, the study also conducted a situational analysis based on observations regarding the concept of safety in the touristic boat tour industry. The study results have demonstrated that, despite the growth in Turkey's economy, there are shortcomings in legal regulations on planning and control, as well as an overall inadequacy with regards to training. We therefore recommend actions that would remedy the shortfalls in the national maritime strategy, update the existing legislation, help balance out operations costs, and increase the safety awareness in maritime tourism. Keywords: Maritime Tourism, Safety Culture, Boat Tour Industry.
