As a result of the entrance of motor vehicles to our lives and industry and trade life becoming more dense in the cities, the rapid population increase in the cities is triggered. The population increase in the cities caused the cities to spread and emerge and therefore the travelling distances elongated. The continuous increase of this demand created cities with population more than millions. The high population in the cities increased the demand for edication and cultural activities, diversified economical, trade and social activities, increased income, automobile ownership and urban transportation. As a result of these activities, increased mobility in physical localities, avenues and roads congest the traffic and urban transportation is no longer sustainable. Traffic jam is only the visible part of the iceberg. Traffic congestion also cause many negative conditions to occur. These are environmental, social and economical problşems such as the time spent in the traffic, environmental problems caused by the exhaust gases, air pollution, unbearable noise and roraring, economical losses due to extreme fuel consumption, work and production loss due to time spent in traffic, stress and human health problems. The uncontinuity of the physical, environmental and social structures in the cities, are a problem today but has also increased the concerns about the future livability of the cities and it is observed that they will create problems in the futur as well. This fact has direct and indirect effects of city life and life quality. For approximately 7000 years human settlements developed in harmony with the environment but after realization of industrial and mechanization process, motor vehicles using fossil fuels started to be used for transportation so the natural life in the city spoiled and sustainable transportation systems gained importance. Construction of new roads, multi layered junctions and autoparks which were considerd to be the solution for transportation problems could also not solve the problem but increased the demand further in stead. A transportation system which is respectful towards historical and humanistic values, uses energy efficiently, protects the environmental values, has economical investment and management, is safe, is comfortable, is economic, is safe, is fast, provides high transportability with low price, ensures equality among the citizens and revives the social, cultural and economic life is necessary for the city and citizens. At first glance, seem like the solution to bike transportation in Istanbul. Number of trips per day in Istanbul with 24 million, 64 percent of the activity in the county, so made as local trips. Here is an important part of the local urban mobility that, seems to be a need for local traffic solutions. Average trip distances of 5-6 km from the District is in Istanbul. These distances can easily be made bicycle transportation. Therefore, considering the urban morphology, urban cycling short distances indispensable transportation system. So in Istanbul, local bike road networks, traffic problems will have positive effects. When we evaluate in terms of sustainability, for distances upto 15km within the city, primary transportation vehicle seems to be bicycle. However in our country, especially in Istanbul, bicycle is completely left out of the transportation systems. When bicycle is evaluated as a complementray transportation system in the city and parallely infrastructure for bicycle transportation is fully made, especially if bicycle road networks are constructed in basis of province or neighbourhood, it is observed that it will have positive effects on Istanbul transportation. The study is evaluated in this perspective, therefore applicability and suggestion of bicycle road network to Sancaktepe province was discussed. Similar systems becoming prevalent in Istanbul will contribute to the solution of traffic problem and also have tangible effects on removing the negativities due to traffic.KEY WORDS: Sustainability, sustainable transport, urban transport, sustainable urban transport, bicycle, bicycle transportation.
