SUMMARY `Forest Fire Problems and Their Solutions in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus` Major subjects which are derived from this study is performed to investigate the adequancy of fire fighting and prevention measures within the border of Turkish Republic Of Northern Cyprus. They have been summarized below: T.R.N.C. forests cover an area of 60934.0 hectares. This amount is equivalent to 18.40 % of the total area of the country. In the forest area, Pinus brutia, Pinus pinea and Cupressus sempervirens are the main tree species. According to data collected from fire records between 1975-1998, there has been total 911 fire cases burning an area of 25389.3 hectares. Annual average number of fire cases is 39, and area destroyed is 1008.0 hectares. `Büyük Beşparmak Dağlan Fire` in 1995 and `Giizelyurt Forest District Hacibayram I Working Group Fire` in 1998 are the big forest fires of Northern Cyprus happened during this period of time. With these big forest fires, significant increase in the amount of destroyed area has been recorded. When the causes of the forest fires are investigated, it has been seen that the major cause for fires is `carelessness and the negligence` (58.07 %). Fires with `unknown causes` have a great ratio of about 34.25 %. The region where the country located is influenced by the Mediterranean Climate and has long fire seasons. Being dominant tree species, Pinus brutia, Pinus pinea and `Cupressus sempervirens ` increase the possibility of coming out large forest fires., `Fasıl 60 Forest Law`, `6/79 Numbered Control of the Land Fires Law` and `22/89 Numbered Criminal Law` are some of the legal arrangements concerning the forest fire precautions and their control. VIIIThe punitive measures in these laws need to be updated to give them a deterrent effect. In order to educate the local people, some educational sign-posts have been placed at several spots in the region. By means of media some T.V. and Radio programs have also been broadcasted. Special attention should be paid to silviculturel studies. A clear management policy should be applied, a balanced mixture of trees and fence surrounding should be provided. Along with fire breaks, it is useful to build up fire resisted bands. The importance of fire breaks is better realized with the latest fires. Breaks which are already planned but not realized yet should be completed as soon as possible and constructed against to the prevailing wind direction. There are 12 fire control stations in the region. From these stations continuous watching need to be done 24 hour-a day in fire seasons. There aren't any deficiencies in the communications. A modern communication system has been established. Forest roads in the region are not adequate. Already planned roads should be completed immediately, and periodic road maintenance should be performed in time. At least some of the forest fire workers should be employed permanently, fire fighting vehicles and equipment should be supported with new procurements. Our diminishing forests are one of the most outstanding national assets which has to be protected at first. Not to forget that, the fire burns not only our forests but our future as well! IX.

VII.
