Natural gas, biogas and alcohols are alternative fuels for spark ignition engines which can be used for decreasing exhaust emissions and improving fuel economy. At the first stage of the study, a pilot scale biogas system was built and biogas was produced from a mixture of manure and water called slurry, consisting of 40% cattle manure, 35% water, 17% whey and 8% poultry manure by cofermentation method. A biogas plant with about 6 m3 capacity is constructed for the biogas production. An automation with SCADA software is developed as to enable the operator to adjust the system to the optimum operation conditions by modifying the system components like the engine, valve, mixer and blower according to the status data such as the pressure, rotational speed, temperature, sensor status and condition etc. Ambient temperature, fermenter temperature, mass flow rate of produced biogas, total produced biogas and fermenter pressure variation graphs are recorded by SCADA software in real time using the data coming from the sensor and devices. Scrubbing and desulfurization were applied to remove the harmful gasses (CO2, H2S) from the produced biogas in two stages. In the end of purification process biogas with CH4 content of 51%, 57% and 87% (M51, M57 and M87) are produced. In the second stage, these biogas fuels are used in a spark ignition engine and their effects on performance, emissions, noise emissions and combustion characteristics are investigated experimentally. A 4 cylinder, 4 stroke water cooled spark ignition engine with 11:1 compression ratio is used in the experiments. Tests were conducted at various loads (1,5- 3- 4,5- 6- 7,5- 9 kW) and constant speed (1500 rpm). Results showed that as the methane ratio in biogas increase, cylinder pressure (23,11%) and exhaust temperature (6,5%) values increase, and specific fuel consumption decreases (13,5%) at 9 kW engine load. Besides, as the methane ratio increases, CO, NOX emissions increase while HC emission decreases.
