Turkish artists have always been influenced by the dynamics of their society, the political developments and intellectual currents. Therefore, it is possible to follow the traces of the changes in the social life in their works. Starting from the first stages of Turkish painting, under the influence of the Western art, female form has become one of the priority issues of the art; however, it has been considered with different concerns, in connection with the undergoing processes and the subjective view of the artist. The Ottoman-Turkish intelligentsia, who wished to form a new social order, has directed attention to woman, who plays an important role in the transmission of culture due to their role as mother and spouse. Starting from the years of Meşrutiyet (the constitutional monarchy), a new woman model is presented in the novels and paintings. The newly devised woman imagery would act as an impetus in the change and transformation of society. When the works, `based on the woman image,` made in this period are examined, the traces of the social changes, reflected to our art will be seen clearly. In this era, in the works of Osman Hamdi Bey and Crown Prince Abdülmecid, confident, educated women, who consume and produce art and culture in the universal sense and who are compliant with western norms, have been described. Therefore, while showing how western and modern we were to the westerners, a new woman model was tried to be imposed on the Ottoman society. In paintings, made by Çallı generation, the women, described by the eyes of the men, shaping the women, sometimes transform into an object for viewing with their beauty and delicacy, sometimes they become the symbol of modernism with their intellectual appearance and sometimes, their motherhood, as their most fundamental social duty, is emphasized. However, in times of war, these women make all kinds of sacrifices and they fight in the front when necessary and supply ammunition to the front. Their sufferings in real life are also reflected on the paintings. Sometime they are attacked and sometimes, they use their bodies as shields to protect their children.Starting from the early years of republic, certain visual elements were used to impose the revolutions, which will provide modernization, to the public. These images were aimed to provide impetus to the social transformation, as they influence the public through art works, newspapers and magazines. Because of this reason, the state has assumed the mission to sponsor and organize artistic activities. The new woman model, outlined by the republican ideologues, was started to be seen in the paintings of the Independents and D Group artists. Now our women have taken of their chadors and uncovered their heads. The urban woman wears suits and wears a hat. At home, she mostly reads books. In the evenings, she dances until she gets tired in a club or reception. Sometimes, she has some discreet romantic relations and sometimes she sits at a café and gossips with her closest friend. Now she has given up her slightly overweight appearance and has removed her eye makeup. Skirt size has shortened, the curves have become slimmer and the she has started to stand up straight. She is no different than her western peers. However, the urban woman, who is focused on being or appearing as a westerner, starts departing from her own culture. In this process, the Turkish intellectual starts thinking that the art, which gradually has become contained in Istanbul, had lost its connections with the realities of the country. The state administrators devise a series of activities to clear the path of art and to introduce artists to Turkish people. While on one hand, the artist is supported through organized State Painting and Sculpture exhibitions, on the other hand, the reflection of the realities of the country on canvas, will be provided and therefore the art will be localized. Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu, one of the artists, who were most influenced with these tours, express the painful life of the Anatolian people in the paintings, made on the basis of folk songs or adopts Anatolian folklore as a theme with carpet or rug patterns.Turkish artists illustrate rural woman in the paintings, narrating the revolution, as diligent and honorable citizens, who is adherent to her country and her Leader, Atatürk. Just like in the preceding centuries, in the first years of the Republic, women used to work in the fields, care the stock, milk the animals, make bread and take the products to the market and sell them. She goes to the course to learn how to read and write. She is so ambitious that, she studies, whenever she gives a break in the field. However, starting from the 1950s, the changes in the world and in our country shifts the priorities of the central government. The woman abandons its position as the symbol of westernization. Now the terms of economic development, industrial leap and democratization have become the indicators of modernization. The state, focusing on economic development, abandons its mission to organize artistic and cultural activities. The artists are left on their own. Both the domestic political situation and also due to the developments in the world art, the social issues lose their importance and abstract painting becomes dominant. In this process, mechanization in agriculture, starts changing the living practices in the rural areas. As the need for labor dwindles, the phenomenon of large families, necessitated by the division of labor, required to perform agricultural production in large fields, starts losing its meaning. On the other hand, the decrease in the value of agricultural products directs the people, living in the rural areas, to seek works in other fields. Therefore, the migration starts. The daily life of the family and the woman, migrating from rural areas to the city, changes in its entirety. Since the women are uneducated, they can not work at posts, requiring specialization and offering social security. Because of this reason, either they look for ways to work at domestic works or have to work at part-time irregular works, which offer no social security. On the other hand, there are also certain differences for the women, who stayed in the village. The women still continues to work in the fields as free family worker. However, the industrial products, which are imported to the domestic household have somewhat made her life easier and mitigated her burden. However, with the mechanization, the men have assumed the works, requiring specialization and the women have continued to perform labor-intensive works in the field. Moreover, their traditional roles in the house also continue. In the city, there are different life models. The persons, who migrated to the cities, have formed an arabesque life model, by synthesizing certain features of the urban life with rural traditions. Along with the skyscrapers and modern buildings, which have started to rise in the cities together with the economic development, shanty towns, in which poor people live, start to spread. Social fluctuations sharpen and political tension increases.Starting from 60s, some artists, who started to show an interest on social issues, make paintings, concerning rural life, migration and shanty town reality. In these works, although the female figure has the lead role, the main theme is poverty. Economic hardships affect everyone, women, men and children. Because of this reason, in the paintings of Neşet Günal, narrating the life of Anatolian peasants, and the works of Nedim Günsür, depicting the migration and shanty town realities, there are no specific emphases, made on the problem of women. In 70s, when the political tension increased dramatically and the conflicts between the right and left wing rose to a peak, the artists do not stay indifferent to the realities of the country. In paintings, made with the awareness of social accountability, the women are described as members of an oppressed mass. Sometimes these women desperately watch their demolished shacks, and sometimes they participate in strikes. In paintings, where the women are sometimes workers and sometimes villagers, their hands and feet are exaggerated. They do not have a feminine attractiveness. They struggle for life with their spouses and children under difficult conditions. On the other hand, in the republican experience of 60 years, each ideology has formed a different woman model, suitable for itself. In different society models, proposed by the Kemalist, Islamist, nationalist and leftist ideologies, the women have assumed different roles and adopted different appearances. This diversity is also reflected on the artistic works. The woman, who is shown sometimes as a decorative object, sometimes concubine of an orientalist view, a devoted mother and sometimes a seductive prostitute, is reflected on the canvas always as the other. Other than a couple artists, no one considers the woman with respect to the social gender roles. When the military government, established following the military coup in 1980, imposed prohibitions to destroy extremist tendencies, a political vacuum is formed in the country in the political sense. The women, who have failed to n the turbulent environment of the 1970s, full of ideological struggles, form a platform in this process, where they could be heard. With the effect of the feminism, the women have started questioning their status in art, as well as in all fields of life. In the paintings, made on the basis of their own problems, while they reflect the social problems, they also criticize patriarchal society. While Gülsün Karamustafa has made pop works, depicting arabesque culture, migration or the male view of female sexuality, Nil Yalter, through video works, criticizes the self-destruction of the individual identity of women, who emphasize their sexuality. Nur Koçak, in `Object Women,? considers the woman, who have transformed into a sexual commodity or advertising material. In these works, in which all institutions of the patriarchal society is question, the reality of women is started to be seen with all its nakedness. The woman, the subject of art, contrary to symbol women of the paintings of the process of Westernization, which commenced with Tanzimat and Republican era, sometimes collects garbage, as shown on the canvas of Cihat Aral, sometimes sells flowers just like in the paintings of Nedret Sekban, earns a living by playing music in the street, sometimes becomes a victim of traditions. In the collages of İrfan Önürmen, made of tulle, the woman is killed for is killed for chatting on internet or being late in preparing breakfast or the woman, who is depicted on stretcher on the canvas of Bedri Rahmi in 1950s, dies when going to the hospital to give birth on the saddle of a horse in 1980s in the paintings of Mustafa Ata.Doubtlessly, inequality of men and women is not the only problem in developing Turkey. Hardships, caused by poverty affect everyone, women, men and children. However, women are crushed under the weight of the social duties and responsibilities, imposed by the patriarchal system and they are exhausted. Moreover, despite all successes, achieved in the process of evolution of 150 years of the Turkish women, which has commenced with the process of westernization, this fact has not changed. Despite all technological developments, which facilitate the daily life, the fact that there are no decreases in the domestic responsibilities of the woman, who emerge in the public area, has further increased her burden. The issue of inequality of men and women, pronounced by the feminists in the 80s, have become a reality, accepted by Turkish men as well in 2000s. This issue, which has been discussed by the intellectuals for more than twenty years, have reached a level of awareness in Turkish society, through cinema, literature and paintings. The women now question the patriarchal order, which legitimizes the oppression on them through certain institutions, ask for accountability and demand. Doubtlessly, the shocking examples of the contemporary art had a great contribution in the formation of this awareness. In this context, through the video works and installations, performed using her own body, Canan Şenol criticizes the rigid and intolerant institutions of the modernism, which creates uniform persons, Şükran Moral expresses her reaction to the conversion of woman to a sexual commodity by the patriarchal system. İrfan Önürmen narrates the women, who are suppressed, become subjects of violence and killed for nonsense reasons?.
