Participatory design approaches are an effective and participatory process where the local residents directly or indirectly take responsibility in the decision-making process about the planning and design of the built environment. This alternative space building process, which is beneficial for spatial and social developments, constitutes a new balance of roles between the designer and the occupant. The main aim of the present thesis titled `Participatory Design Experience: Design Games with Children` is to conduct a real workshop experience with the design games method in the process of experiencing the participatory design approach which includes a collaboration between the occupants, which in this case are children, and the designer. Thus, the participant would assess the functioning of the design process and the changing role of the designer would be discussed in the process. Karayemiş Park, which is located in Ortahisar district, Trabzon province in Turkey, was selected as the study area and a workshop was organized where approaches and techniques that aimed to improve the participation level. Within the scope of participatory design approach, the methodology and the implementation of the study were developed and implemented by the author. Based on the above-mentioned analyses, the main theme of the project was not to focus on the final design product, but on an analysis of the design process. The study aimed to determine how to manage the design process based on the spatial needs and desires of the participants, to explore the decision-making based on consensus and the balance between the designer and the occupant, and to improve the awareness of the occupants on design.
