Özet

The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between architecture and literature which is believed to be useful in architectural research and to determine the change of urban images in Türkocağı neighborhood and four neighborhoods associated with it. Within this aim, through the instrument of an autobiographic novel which used the study area as the background, time period is defined, the contents of the novel are analyzed and urban images are investigated using the Lynch method, which is determined to be the most appropriate method for the research. In determining the changes of urban images over the years, some of the residents of the old neighborhoods within the timeframe given by the novel are reached and a survey is conducted. The examination focusing on Türkocağı neighborhood and surrounding neighborhoods in the city of Adana revealed that the impact of gathering and sharing value of streets has decreased and that as well as similarities there are also differences in terms of reference points within the time span of 50 years. Furthermore, urban image elements not mentioned in the novel Root of the Poison are identified by this research. Finally, no urban elements that refer to imaginary spaces were noted in the novel, which showed that the author directly used the neighborhood and its surroundings as the background for his story. Keywords: City Image, The Novel Root of the Poison, Muzaffer Izgu, Adana Türkocağı Neighbourhood.
