In oral and maxillofacial surgery, distraction osteogenesis (DO) technique hasbeen proved to be a rapid and minimally invasive surgical method for the treatment ofcranium defects or anomalies of maxilla, mandibula, midface or orbita. Compared withconventional ortoghnatic osteotomies and bone graft techniques, DO has severaladvantages such as simultaneous expansion of surrounding soft tissues through skeletaladvancement to a required extent. Yet, another advantage of the technique is that it doesnot require a donor site. Although DO has produced successful clinical results, furtherexperimental and clinical studies are required to study the amount of emergingregenerate and the maturation of bone.In this study, we aim to shorten the consolidation period of DO, making use ofthe osteoclastic bone resorption inhibitor effect of zoledronic acid, a new and effectivemember of the bisphosphonate group (Zometa®, Novartis Pharma, Stein AG, Swiss). This study was performed on mandible of 32 rabbits. Two main groups were formed asovariectomized (n=20) and non ovariectomized (n=12) groups. On these groups, bilateral mandible DO was performed at a rate of 0.45mm every 12 hours for 10 days.In one of the ovariectomized groups (n=8), 0.1 mg/kg zoledronic acid was appliedintravenously. Regenerated bone was evaluated with radiological, dansitometric andhistopathological measurements on the 1st ,14th and 28th days of the DO consolidationperiod. All data were statistically analyzed. It was observed that the decrease in serum oestrogen level as a result ofovariectomy had adverse effects on new bone ossification. Finally, this study showedthat administration of systematical zoledronic acid had positive effect on regeneratingbone quality by DO on osteopenic rabbits.

Çene-yüz cerrahisinde distraksiyon osteogenezi (DO) tekniği; maksilla, mandibula, ortayüz, orbita ve kranium defektlerinin, anomalilerinin tedavisinde hızlı veminimal invaziv cerrahi yöntemdir. DO tekniği istenilen miktarda iskeletsel ilerletme ileçevre yumuşak dokuların eş zamanlı ekspansiyonunun yanı sıra donör sahaya ihtiyaçduyulmaması açısından, geleneksel ortognatik osteotomiler ve kemik greftlemeprosedürlerine göre avantajlara sahiptir. DO'nun klinik olarak başarılı sonuçlarıgörülmektedir. Oluşturulan gruplara 10 gün süresince her 12 saatte 0.45mm olmak üzere bilateral mandibular DO uygulanmıştır.
