The purpose of this research was to determine KPSS General Ability Test İtems for Differantial Item Functioning (DIF) in terms of gender and undergraduate branch, and its possible sources of bias.In this research, for branch base DIF analyze, undergraduate programs were combined into two categories: Soscial Science Group (SSG) and Science Group (SG). The research was carried out with the participation of a total of 4864 candidates with 2375 from SSG and 2489 from SG who had taken 2007 KPSS General Ability Test previously. To identify Differantial Item Functioning (DIF), Mantel-Haelzsen (MH), Item Response Theory – Likelihood Ratio (IRTLR), and BILOG MG DIF Algorithm methods were used. Expert opinion was taken to identify possible source of bias.As a results of the gender base analyses, in the verbal test, three items showed DIF in favor of females, one item showed DIF in favor of males. In the Quantitative Test, four items showed DIF in favor of females, six items showed DIF in favor of males. Branch based DIF analyses showed that in the Verbal Test, five items showed DIF in favor of SSG and two items showed DIF in favor of SG. In the Quantitative Test, seven items showed DIF in favor of SSG and five items showed DIF in favor of SG.According to the findings, it was seen that in the Verbal Test, the items related to vocabulary, reading comprehension and narrative features were in favor of females and the item containing the words and topics that are rather of the man's life was in favor of males. In the Quantitative Test, the items which required calculation of algebraic and numeral expressions were in favor of females, the real life world problems and the items related to table and chart reading were in favor of males. As a result of the gender base analyses, it was seen that in the Verbal Test, the items related to reading comprehension and grammar were in favor of SSG. In the Quantitative Test, the numeric problems made by verbal expressions and items related to table and chart reading were in favor of SSG, the items related to rooted expressions, theory of chances, geometry which required knowledge of the content area to solve were in favor of SG. In terms of DIF methods, MH and IRTLR based analyses results were similar; whereas BILOG MG DIF determined less items with DIF when compared to the other methods. Keywords: Differantial Functioning İtems, KPSS, Mantel Haenszel, Item Response Theory-Likelihood Ratio, BILOG MG DIF Algorithm.
