Fourth generation (4G) communication systems have become focus of the current developments in the communication systems. In this generation, adaptive modulation techniques are planned to be used for effective usage of the communication channel. Before changing the modulation type, the receiver has to be notified to demodulate the transmitted data correctly. This notification process requires channel capacity. However, modulation identification methods eliminate this requirement and allow the increase of transmission capacity. Feature or statistical based modulation identification algorithms are presented in [1]. In this thesis, modulation identification algorithms are developed for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems which are featured systems to be used in the 4G. These algorithms are developed by maximum a posterior probability (MAP) which is a statistical method. In the one of the presented algorithms, we extend the modulation identification problem into a form where no priori information is available about the constellation map. Constellation map can be assumed as one constant map for every low-level modulation but it cannot be assumed for high-level modulations because it can vary for same level. Therefore, constellation map should be sent to the receiver. However, when the signal comes from unknown source, this presented algorithm becomes valuable to identify modulation type. Therefore, the algorithm is useful in Cognitive radio or military applications. The second presented modulation identification algorithm identifies the modulation and estimates the channel by embedding modulation information into pilot symbols. These pilots are already in an OFDM symbol for channel estimation. The modulation information is added by adapting the pilot symbols for every modulation type. Thus, more accurate modulation identification with channel estimation is carried out. Because the number of pilot symbols does not change during the process, there is no loss in the channel estimation. The algorithm can be applied easily to any OFDM system due to its simplicity.
