Abstract In this thesis, the scope of `urban legend`, which is one of the -relatively- new study topics of contemporary folklore studies, and its relationship with socio- cultural structure were tried to be determined. To reach that goal, first of all, discussions were carried out with the help of various definitions and theoretical studies on the subtitles of legend such as legend and myth, historical legends, religous legends, supernatural legends; with the help of the usage of `urban legend` in the fields other than folklore (especially in newspapers); and whit the help of narratives collected for the thesis. In these discussions, the definition of urban legend, its scope, and its relationship with other types of legends were tried to be clarified by giving examples from the texts collected for the thesis. Although it seems like a narrative text based study, in the collections, the quality of the interaction between the narrator and the listener was also important with the social environment, and the interaction between the narrators of the texts and narration canals. These characteristics on the text were also considered in the parts of the study, in which both the definitions and theoretical structure were evaluated and the narrative texts were analyzed. After the discussions in the first part, which were about the definition and scope of urban legend, although the events of the texts were not happened today, the collected narratives texts, which were defined as 'legends`, were considered as `current` because of their characteristics like living in today's world, living in an urban area -an area that the narratives of the thesis collected-, and interacting with people who know them.Because of these qualities, it is put forward that the narratives we collected reflect urban life, and knowledge and values of the members of community. To reach the goal of the thesis, the narratives were classified -unique to this thesis- according to the socio-cultural structure they reflect and according to their messages, according to their contexts, which are reflected in the content and which are recorded in the collections, according to their motifs, and according to various elements of the texts.
