Research and development procees of electric vehicles (EVs) has continued for many years for protecting environment and also for usage of energy efficient vehicles at the transportation. When looked at the usage of the electric and hybrid electric vehicles (EV/HEV) in history, these vehicles were not interested in years between 1920s and 1960s because of the popularity of the internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs). In 1911, by the invention of the starter motor, the starting process of ICE vehicles became easier and also their range capacity and short time of refueling process made them more popular. After that period, an Arab oil ambargo occured in 1970s and thus the research and development process of EVs and HEVs again started and have been continuing for many years to improve the energy efficiency and to satisfy the usage of them all over the world. This thesis is mainly about the present status, state of the art, and the control and performance parameters of EVs,which are zero emission vehicles (ZEVs).An EV includes two subsystems: one is the electrical subsystem, containing batteries, inverters and electric motors and the other one is the mechanical subystem, containing transmissions, differential and wheels. Since the electrical systems directly affect the traction of an EV, integrated modeling considering both the mechanical and electrical systems is necessary. Battery and the electric motor is the two main components of the electrical system, so modeling and selection of them is important for an effective and efficient traction system. When the literature is considered, there are four battery types (Lead-acid, Ni-MH, NaS, Li-ion) and two electric motors (Induction and Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors) that are used in EVs. Li-ion batteries and permanent magnet synchronous motors are efficient and useful for EVs. In this thesis, a Matlab model of the EV is developed to simulate the electrical and mechanical subsystem of an EV to control the electric motor for a specified scenerio by choosing Li-Ion battery and permanent magnet synchronous motor. In the literature, the control process of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) are in three ways: scalar control, vector control and the other intelligent control methods such as neural networks (NNs) and fuzzy logic control (FLC). Since vector control is better than scalar control, the performace paramaters of the vehicle such as state of charge (SOC) of the battery and the speed response of the vehicle are compared in fuzzy logic control and PI control. Key words: Electric and hybrid electric vehicles (EV/HEV), internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs), zero emission vehicles (ZEVs), permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM), Fuzzy logic control (FLC), state of charge (SOC) of the battery.
