Hippocrates treated laughter as a clinical subject of study and made the distinction between it and mental illness, in contrast to Plato who led in the derision of humor and subsequently the social unacceptability of laughter. Phallic symbols, assumedly the earliest examples of humor led Freud to believe that humor is the expression of morally unacceptable desires. With the passage of time and changes in moral standards the limitations on expression of thought diminished and forms of expression flourished. This transformation is reflected in the various forms of fun and sense of humor. In order to lay down a foundation for this subject it was first necessary to define what is meant by humor and fun. By examining the jest and the caricature aspects of humor separately it was then easier to put forth the relationship between these two aspects. The subject of fun became a topic of examination by artists starting with the works of Bergson who examined fun as both an inseparable part of pleasure and play and as a form of creativity. Having laid the groundwork, art from the beginnings of the 20th century to the current day was examined in three periods: humor and fun in the modern era, in the postmodern era, and in the contemporary era.The examination of humor and fun in modern art was divided into an examination of modernity, and the use of humor and fun in modern schools of thought. In the first section, in treating the topic of modernity the topics of the individual and of the observer were touched on. The aesthetic values of the era as they have an effect on humor and fun were then examined. In the second section important artists of the modern era and their works making use of humor and fun were described.Modern art and postmodern art view humor and fun differently. The postmodern era opened new avenues for art due to the use of play and irony, disassociation, hybrids, sub cultures, pop and elite culture fusions. These topics were examined in the six sections comprising the third chapter. The chapter begins with the changes witnessed in humor and fun between the modern and postmodern eras. Next under the section on art and popular entertainment, the use of popular entertainment as a product of newly developing forms of communication by the artist was examined. Under the third section on postmodern art, aesthetics, humor and fun, the state of art and aesthetics were examined. The differences between aesthetic objects of modern and postmodern times were also touched on in this section. Postmodern art and artworks from the viewpoint of humor and fun as subject of the forth section, and humor and fun of postmodern era artists as subject of the fifth section, although appearing superficially alike, were treated separately. While the forth section took to task art and artworks the fifth section looked more at the artists themselves. In the final section the role of the observer was examined.Chapter four covers humor and fun in contemporary times in one section. The examples of artwork representing contemporary times inherently reflect the contemporary era and thus an explicit introduction to the era was not presented as was done in the previous two chapters.
