Özet

Since the time when Turkish painting began to develop in the Western sense until the 1950s, Turkish painting has predominantly chosen landscape, still life, portrait and daily life scenes as its subject. These are also the basis of the 17th-century Dutch genre painting. For this reason, in the first part of the thesis, the definition, scope, historical development and conditions that led to the emergence of this painting style were evaluated. It was aimed to provide a better understanding of the subject by giving examples from the Dutch genre painters. In the second part, the Turkish painting art was discussed. It has developed in the Western sense with the Western influences that started to be seen in the Turkish miniature arts and with the transition to the canvas painting. The parallelisms of the Turkish painting with the genre art through the understanding of art, artist associations and preferred subjects of the period were examined. In order to emphasize these parallelisms, examples from the 17th century Dutch paintings were compared with examples from the Turkish painting art. From the 1800s to the 1950s, the Turkish painting art preferred the subjects that could be considered to be in the genre painting, despite all the formal approaches that had changed. In the last section, the reasons for this preference were discussed, and the issues in the Turkish painting were approached from a different point of view considering both the Western influences and the internal dynamics of the country.
