Özet

Located in the Southwest Anatolian part of the Aegean Region, Muğla is a primary tourism Destination in Turkey. With its counties Bodrum, Marmaris, Fethiye, Dalaman and Köyceğiz, the city is the third mostly visited city of the country after the cities of Antalya and Istanbul. However, tourism remained at a quite limited level in the city of Muğla, the administrative centre. Fundamental factors effective in the formation of the foundation, development and macroform of the city include topography, water resources, transportation, administration and education. Relative development of tourism in the city has occurred through opportunities brought by tourism mobility at the coastal settings and restoration studies conducted in the city centre in the scope of protectionism. We may talk about a considerable effect of tourism in the development of the city of Muğla is possible only by optimum use of the cultural tourism potential of the city. This study concerns exploration historical evolution of Muğla intended to be made a brand city in the cultural tourism as well as effect of the geographical factors on its development and cultural tourism potential. Findings in the thesis have been through synthesis and analyses (qualitatively and quantitatively) of the data compiled from literature survey, historical and current city archive, official references, site surveys and the geographical information system.
