DYP was unable to take part in 1983 parliamentary elections due to vetoes and was represented as the 3rd party by 59 deputies with a vote percentage of 19.1% in the National Assembly in the general elections held on November 27th, 1987. In 1989 local election, it ranked 2nd after SHP with a vote percentage of 25%. Upon the election of Turgut Özal a the President of the Republic of Turkey on November 9th, 1989, DYP took part as the first party in the parliament with 178 deputies and a vote percentage of 27.0% in the early general election held on October 20th, 1991. However, the need for 226 deputies to come to power alone caused coalition governments to be unavoidable. For this coalition, which would survive until the death of Özal, Süleyman Demirel, the leader of DYP, preferred, SHP, led by Erdal İnönü who had been the political dissident of him for long years. As Demirel elected as the President of The Republic of Turkey after the death of Özal, Tansu Çiller chaired the party and Erdal İnönü handed over the rein to Murat Karayalçın. The DYP-SHP Coalition continued during this period and the name of the coalition was changed to DYP-CHP with the merger of SHP into CHP on February 14th, 1995. Ranked third by voting percentage (19.2%) and second by the number of deputies (135) in the general elections of 1995, DYP formed a coalition with the RP on June 28th, 1995, just after a two-month failed coalition attempt with ANAP. This coalition ended de facto on February 28th, 1997 and de jure on June 18th 1997, as from which DYP won a seat in opposition. 23 Haziran 1983 tarihinde kurulan Doğru Yol Partisi (DYP), vetolar nedeniyle 1983 milletvekili seçimlerine katılamamış; 29 Kasım 1987 milletvekili genel seçimlerinde %19.1 oyla 59 milletvekili ile TBMM'de 3. Parti olarak temsil edilmiştir. 1989 yerel seçimlerinde ise % 25 oy oranıyla SHP'nin ardından 2. sıraya yükselmiştir. DYP, Turgut Özal'ın 9 Kasım 1989 tarihinde cumhurbaşkanı olmasının ardından 20 Ekim 1991 tarihinde yapılan erken genel seçimler sonucunda %27.0 oy oranıyla ve 178 milletvekili ile birinci parti olarak meclise girmiştir. Ancak tek başına iktidar olabilmek için 226 milletvekiline ihtiyaç duyulduğundan koalisyon hükümetleri zorunlu hale gelmiştir. DYP lideri Süleyman Demirel koalisyondaki tercihini uzun yıllar siyasi rakibi olan Erdal İnönü'nün genel başkanı olduğu SHP'den yana kullanmış, bu koalisyon Özal'ın ölümüne kadar devam etmiştir. Özal'ın ölümünden sonra Demirel'in cumhurbaşkanı olması nedeniyle Tansu Çiller DYP genel başkanlığına seçilmiş, Erdal İnönü de SHP genel başkanlığı koltuğunu Murat Karayalçın'a devretmiştir.
