Özet

In this study, being an urbanite as part of the socialising process, is interpreted through the concept of identity. Starting with questions such as ?Who is an İstanbulite??, ?Is there any İstanbulite??, ?Is it possible to speak of an İstanbulite identity??, ?What is the properties of the Istanbulite identity in minds?? and seeking answers to this questions considering urban identity, imaginary identity and `hemşehri` relations between those coming from other cities consists the basis of this study. The formation of fellowship (citizentry) associations increase rapidly in Istanbul and this rise shows the clues of a new sociological formation. Sociologically itis important to note this rise at the opening of associations and the process of the local identity formations and the schemes illustrated by them. Additionally it is also worth to consider in terms of social analyses, how the local identities perceive this imaginary conception so called `being from Istanbul` and how they call it as a social perception manner. The questions that was directed at the group representing Istanbul?s population in socio-economic and cultural respects have constituted the field work of this doctorate thesis. `Being an Istanbul? as an identity, has been covered in terms of being a fellow townsman.Key words:Identity, social identity, collective identity, personal identity, imaginer identity, urban identity, identity of İstanbulite, imaginar identity of İstanbulite, İstanbul, migration, slums, urbanization.
