THESIS SUMMARIES Education has been important for every nation in every age. Because it is education which forms the culture of the nation and enables to become a civilization. That is why education can not be neglected. If we look through the education history of Turkey and Japan, we consider that, both countries valued the subject and sometimes in case of noticing the lack points, non of the countries hesitated to start up reforms. In Japan education was taken more objectively and was revised far from the government's interests. But this could not be achieved in Turkey. In the 19. century, which is of great importance for both countries, in addition to other areas, surely making revisions in the education area was inevitable. In those years the revision of education in Turkey and Japan was seperated in eminent points. The main seperation was collateraly to Ottoman's insuccessive results in wars, the reforms in military area was taken more seriously and generally it was the military schools which were being reformed. Considering that age, we can not say it was completely wrong. But we think that the education reform should be deployed. This is the reason of the eminent success of education reform in Japan. Japan could be able to take advantage of the heritage of the past and the new schools were basicly established on the schools which were constituted in the Tokugawa period. Also they let the researchers and teachers from abroad come to Japan and took advantage of their utilities. In Japan there has never been a dogmatic deny against West's sciences. But in Ottoman Empire, the education reform, especially religious education was far from conception. The reason for that was to avoid from wrong orientations of the public by religion apostles. Because of not making reforms on religious education although religion apostles, lots of problems took place for the Ottomans. But in Japan, being united under the `Japanese` concept, the chief supporter for contemporary education has been the Japanese people. So the nationalism movement which has been the begining of the end for the Ottoman Empire, has been the saviour of Japan. Far from that in Anatolia, which is considered as the meeting point of the civilizations, wars had always taken place. Though as an island country, Japan has always been away from dangerous situations. Because of that every reforms, including education reform was successful. XI.
