This dissertation focuses on the commercial amphorae produced in the Ionia region in terms of typological, chronological and stylistic features. In the ancient world, commercial amphorae were generally used for transporting trade goods such as wine, olive oil and brined seafood. Production of commercial amphorae can be traced in Western Anatolia for the whole Archaic Period. Recent studies on the local amphorae productions within the excavations conducted in the Ionian sites especially for the last 25?30 years, and new clay analysis provide novel data for the localisations of the commercial amphorae. In the light of these new data, it is clear that the commercial amphorae were produced in the important centres of Ionia, such as Erythrai, Ephesos, Cnidos and Teos.Until today, it was thought that the decoration systems with glazed painting were only applied on the amphorae from Chios and Clazomenae. Recent data from Miletos excavations exhibit that glazed painted commercial amphorae were produced during entire the Archaic Period in Miletos, beginning with the 7th century BC. With the second half of the 7th century BC, a regional and collaborated production system was established by the leadership of Chios and Clazomenae in Northern Ionia. During the last quarter of the 7th century BC, the common form and decoration systems in Northern Ionia begin to collapse, and the local production centres begin to create their peculiar forms in order to address their own productions better. The second half of the 6th century BC brings a high increase for the production of commercial amphorae. The amphorae produced were sent to the whole ancient world. The Ionian Revolution between 499 and 494 BC resulted with great destructions and caused a serious interruption for commercial amphorae production. After this date, the island states partly spared from the Persian domination such as Chios, Lesbos and Thasos appear to take over the control of the entire market.
