In this study, two filmic adaptations of Mary Shelley?s novel Frankenstein, namely Frankenstein (1931) and Mary Shelley?s Frankenstein (1994) have been analysed to see how and to what degree the Hollywood films in question acknowledge the writer?s feminist standpoint. In this process, first, the feminist discourses in Mary Shelley?s novel Frankenstein have been studied, and it has been observed that the narrative in her novel denounces patriarchal appropriation that is instrumental in both concealing homosexual desire that underlies male homosocial relationships, and encapsulating the female subject within the patriarchal construct, family. Thereby, Mary Shelley?s political stand evident in her condemnation regarding not only the object position the female subjects are reduced as they are engulfed in the patriarchal traffick, but the otherness attached to those that are defined as illicit, menacing, and non-representable has been foregrounded. In two consecutive chapters studying James Whale?s Frankenstein and Kenneth Branagh?s Mary Shelley?s Frankenstein successively, first, the relationship established between the spectator and the visual signification in each extradiegetic/diegetic paradigm has been examined, and it has been observed that Whale?s Frankenstein ? with the exception of some diegetic moments that delate the contradictions embedded in the narrative subconscious ? nevertheless accentuates strong misogynist and homophobic discourses, indicating not only the agenda that primarily intends to construct the spectator in line with these discourses, but the dramatic appropriation and effacement the film imposes on Shelley?s narrative. Branagh?s Mary Shelley?s Frankenstein, however, avowedly acknowledges Shelley?s concerns, and, in spite of its own contradictions that are nevertheless congenerous to those of Whale?s work, further elaborates her narrative especially in the context of the relationship it builds with the spectator ? a relationship that is primarily attuned to the specific filmic discourse, echoing his acknowledgement.

Bu çalışmada, Mary Shelley'nin Frankenstein adlı romanının 1931 yapımı Frankenstein ve 1994 yapımı Mary Shelley's Frankenstein adlı film uyarlamaları incelenerek, Mary Shelley'nin romanının temellerini oluşturan feminist bakış açısının, inceleme konusu olan Hollywood filmlerinin ataerkil düzene olan ilişkileri çerçevesinde ne doğrultuda yorumlandığı araştırılmıştır. Bu noktadan hareketle, Mary Shelley'nin Frankenstein adlı eseri incelenmiş ve yazarın geliştirdiği feminist söylemin, ataerkil ideolojinin yok sayarak homososyal ilişkilerle perdelediği eril homoseksüel arzuyu gözler önüne serdiğine ve söz konusu olan perdelenmede dişi öznelerin birer aracı olarak kullanıldığına işaret ettiği görülmüştür. Bu süreçte Mary Shelley'nin eserinin, hem dişi öznelerin özellikle aile kurumu içinde dolanıma girmeleriyle indirgendikleri nesne konumunu, hem de ataerkil sistemin ayrıksılaştırdığı ötekilerin konumunu vurguladığı gözlemlenmiştir. Birbirini izleyen ve sırasıyla James Whale'in 1931 yapımı Frankenstein ve Kenneth Branagh'ın 1994 yapımı Mary Shelley's Frankenstein adlı film uyarlamalarını inceleyen iki bölümde ise, sinemanın özgün dilinin, izleyici ile film anlatısının gösterge dizgesi arasında kurduğu ilişki incelenmiştir. Bunun sonucunda 1931 yapımı Frankenstein adlı film uyarlamasının, kendi iç çelişkilerini ele vermesine rağmen, temel olarak Mary Shelley'nin Frankenstein adlı eserini, Hollywood temelli kadın düşmanı, homofobik ve statükocu kurumsal söylemler yoluyla olumsuzladığı ve izleyicilerileri buna koşut olarak yapılandırmayı hedeflediği görülmüştür. Öte yandan, 1994 yapımı Mary Shelley's Frankenstein adlı film uyarlamasının, yine kendi iç çelişkilerine rağmen, romanın temel politik meselelerine önemli derecede sadık kaldığı ve izleyiciyle bu doğrultuda gelişen söylemler üzerinden ilişki kurduğu, hatta romanı, Mary Shelley'nin özellikle vurguladığı meselelerden sapmayarak dikkate değer bir şekilde geliştirdiği ve zenginleştirdiği saptanmıştır.
