Objective: There are many factors affecting surgical results in Chronic Otitis Media (COM). One of these factors is pathology in nasal cavity. The pathologies in nasal cavity affect the results of tympanoplasty and ossiculoplasty by causing eustachian tube dysfunction. The aim of this study is to investigate prognostic values of Acoustic Rhinometry (ARM) and Rhinomanometry (RNM) by comparing the pre-surgical objective nasal cavity measurements to the surgical results of tympanoplasty surgeries. Method: A group of 58 cases that have been diagnosed as COM and for which surgical treatments have been applied between the years 2009 and 2014 in ENT and Head and Neck Surgery Department of Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University Faculty of Medicine has been selected as the study group. Before operation, Otoscopic and microscopic examination were performed for diagnosis, the audiologic tests were performed. Before the operation to ARM ve RNM tests which measures the nasal cavity objectively were performed to patients. After the operation, post operative examinations were performed within 6 months. Otoscopic and microscopic examinations were performed postoperative, eradication of infection and graft retention success were evaluated. In addition postoperative hearing status was assessed by audiologic tests. Infection control, graft uptake success, hearing improving parameters and presurgical ARM and RNM measurements in the cases have been statistically compared. Results: Our study includes 58 patients operated due to COM. 34 of the cases (% 58,6) were female, 24 (% 41,4) were male. The age of patients ranged between 13 and 62 average 32,12±14,48 years. The mean preoperative air bone gap was 30,00±11,54 and the mean postoperative air bone gap was 20,71±11,09. Difference between mean preoperative air bone gap to mean postoperative air bone gap was found to be statistically significant (p<0,05). Comparison of ARM and RNM measurement results in terms of eradication of infection, graft retention success and gain in hearing were not found to be statistically significant. Conclusion: For cases where surgical treatment was applied, it has been figured out that, ARM and RNM test results do not statistically show significant difference between the cases where infection control is achieved and those where infection continues. Similarly, it has been seen that success rate of graft and hearing are not affected by nasal cavity according to the ARM and RNM measurements. On the other hand, success of hearing has been found higher in cases where ARM and RNM results are also in better levels.Key Words: Chronic Otitis Media, Acoustic Rhinometry and Rhinomanometry, Prognosis.
