Following a short review of such topics as family, the importance of family from the perspective of the education of religion, the points necessary to be considered in the education of religion in family, this study is intended to investigate whether or not family principally contributes to children's education of religion, and in what aspects the family is successful or unsuccessful, whether the family members consider themselves adequate or inadequate in providing their children with education of religion, as well as their views on the education of religion offered at school. This study, using a quantitative method of research, has carried out in-depth interviews with 30 families who have different worldviews and who live in Istanbul, which has received immigrants from every region of the country and hosts families from every kind of socioeconomic and sociocultural structure. In the interview, the participants are asked such open-ended questions as, `Should the children be given education of religion? If they should be, from what age onwards should they be given and by who? What are the topics that most attract the children's sense of curiosity about religion? Do the parents consider themselves to be adequate in answering their children's questions about religion? The answers are entered in the program of NVivo10, which is a quantitative analysis program; once they are collected and coded in certain categories and themes, they are analyzed and interpreted, to finally make some assessments and suggestions. The findings have established that family and family members in general and parents in particular have important effects on the individual's religious personality, yet they are inadequate in giving their children education of religion. They also show that the parents think that their children should receive education of religion, but they consider neither themselves nor school to be adequate for this task. It has been also discovered that the major factor in the families' tendency to regard the education of religion offered by school as inadequate is the inadequacy of teacher for this task.
