Purpose: To determine the effects of horizontal and vertical strabismus surgery on choroidal thickness. Material and Method: In the study, 56 eyes of 37 patients who underwent strabismus surgery at the Ophthalmology Department, Medical Faculty of Ondokuz Mayıs University, were assessed prospectively. The patients included in the study were grouped in four subgroups as patients who had one horizontal muscle (medial rectus or lateral rectus) surgery (group 1), patients who had one vertical muscle surgery (inferior oblique) (group 2), patients who had double horizontal muscle (medial rectus and lateral rectus) surgery (group 3) and patients who had one horizontal and one vertical muscle surgery (medial rectus and inferior oblique, lateral rectus and inferior oblique) (group 4). Apart from that, the patients were grouped in two groups as patients who had one muscle surgery (group A) and the patients who had double muscle surgery (group B). Choroidal thickness of the patients who participated in the study were measured preoperatively and on the postoperative first day, second week, first month and third month with EDI (Enhanced depth imaging)-OCT (Optic coherence tomography). Choroidal thickness was measured and recorded with Cirrus OKT at the nasal (N1, N2) and temporal (T1, T2) fovea up to 1000 μm with 500 μm intervals at four points and at subfoveal area (S). All the values were compared between groups. Results: Average age of 37 patients included in the study was 15.59 ± 13.84 (3-58) years (p=0.052). 19 (51.35%) of the patients were male, while 18 (48.65%) were female. In preoperative and post operative first day comparison, a decrease in choroidal thickness was found in all areas in group 1 (p<0.001). In group 2, statistically significant decrease was found in the values of N2, N1 and S (respectively, p=0.028; p=0.008; p=0.008). However, no statistically significant difference was found in T1 and T2 values (respectively, p=0.051; p=0.110). In group 3, statistically significant decrease was found in the N2, N1 and T2 values (respectively, p=0.016; p=0.037; p=0.013). However, no statistically significant difference was found between S and T1 values (respectively, p=0.068; p=0.130). In Group 4, statistically significant decrease was found in N1 values (p=0.028). However, no statistically significant difference was found in N2, S, T1 and T2 values (respectively, p=0.553, p=0.068, p=0.139, p=0.286). When preoperative and postoperative second weeks were compared, statistically significant difference was found in choroidal thickness in all areas of group 1 and group 2. No statistically significant difference was found in all quadrants of group 3 and 4. When preoperative and postoperative first month were compared, statistically significant decrease in choroidal thickness was found in the subfoveal area of group 1 (p=0.044) and N1 area of group 2 (p=0.024). No significant difference was found in other areas. In groups 3 and 4, no statistically significant difference was found in all areas. When preoperative and postoperative third month were compared, thinning or thickening in choroidal thickness was not found in any group. Preoperative and postoperative 1st day, 2nd week, 1st month and 3rd month N2, N1, S, T1, T2 values were compared in group 1 and group 2. No statistically significant difference was found. Preoperative and postoperative 1st day, 2nd week, 1st month and 3rd month N2, N1, S, T1, T2 values were compared in group 3 and group 4. No statistically significant difference was found. Group A and group B preoperative and postoperative 1st day, 2nd week, 1st month and 3rd month N2, N1, S, T1, T2 values were compared. No statistically significant difference was found. Conclusion: Strabismus surgery causes choroidal thickness in early postoperative period. Although the exact mechanism is unknown, the reason can be inflammation or ischemic process that develops as a result of vascular auto regulation. The possible mechanism can be a decrease in choroidal tissue as a result of decreased choroidal blood flow in acute phase and as a result of compensation mechanisms return of choroidal thickness to preoperative values in chronic phase. Amaç: Horizontal ve vertikal şaşılık cerrahi prosedürlerinin koroid kalınlığı üzerine etkilerini belirlemek.Gereç ve yöntem: Çalışmada Ondokuz Mayıs Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Göz Hastalıkları Anabilim Dalı'nda şaşılık ameliyatı yapılan 37 hastanın 56 gözü prospektif olarak değerlendirildi. Çalışmaya alınan hastalar, tek horizontal kas (medial rektus veya lateral rektus) cerrahisi yapılanlar (grup 1), tek vertikal kas (alt oblik) cerrahisiyapılanlar (grup 2), çift horizontal kas (medial rektus ve lateral rektus) cerrahisi yapılanlar (grup 3), ve tek horizontal ve tek vertikal kas (medial rektus ve alt oblik, lateral rektus ve alt oblik) cerrahisi yapılanlar (grup 4) olarak dört alt gruba ayrıldı. Bunun dışında tek kas cerrahisi yapılan hastalar (grup A), çift kas cerrahisi yapılan hastalar (grup B) olarak iki üst grup oluşturuldu. Hastaların 19'u (% 51.35) erkek, 18'i (% 48.65) kadındı.
