Zimbabwe's elections of 30 July 2018, attracted phenomenal media attention surpassing all previous elections since the country gained independence in 1980. This paper analyses the representation of political actors in two Zimbabwean newspapers namely, the state owned, The Herald and the privately owned Daily News, in order to understand better the mismatch between the normative roles of the press and actual practices. The press is the main source of information during an election and can sway the electorate to vote in a certain way by influencing public opinions and perceptions. It constructs reality by selecting 'relevant news', accentuating certain issues while suppressing or downplaying others. This study takes a constructionist approach to framing in order to explore how through the employment of certain frames The Herald and the Daily News legitimised or delegitimised the political leadership of Emmerson Mnangagwa and Nelson Chamisa 15 days before and 15 days after the July 2018 elections in Zimbabwe. This qualitative study makes use of purposively sampled newspaper stories from the two newspapers that contain information about the leadership of the two leaders both at party and national level. Data was gathered through online archives of the two newspapers and analysed through content analysis. The paper argues that frames available to journalists consciously or unconsciously are rooted in the culture and discursive practices in which they operate, and in specific historical periods.Similar frames can be used by two different newspapers to legitimise or delegitimise political leaders. Likewise different frames can be used to achieve the same ends. Both newspapers used similar frames, that is representation of main political leader, Violence after elections ,unsuitability of the political parties to rule ,economic recovery and progress. Only one frame; unparalleled leadership was exclusively used by The Herald. The Daily News also used the frame of Zec inability to run free and fair elections exclusively. Key Words: Framing, Frames, The Herald, Daily News, Emmerson Mnangagwa and Nelson Chamisa.
