Urban spaces undergo a restructuring and change process both in the world and in our country under the present conditions. While this change followed a natural course until the 19th century, it accelerated with the development of industry. These changes, which came to the agenda especially after the Second World War in the West, have started to be made systematically under the name of urban transformation practices. In our country, especially in parallel with the development of industry, there has been an overpopulation of population in urban centers with the internal migration. This increasing population has caused many urban problems. Especially in Ankara and Istanbul, this population density has created a housing problem. However, in urban areas, skewed construction, infrastructure problems and inadequacies in social structure have occurred.Later on, due to reasons such as unplanned urbanization, loss of function, inadequacy in social development, urban transformation projects have been implemented in order to keep pace with social, economic, physical and cultural developments and resolve the urban problems that have been occurred and address the new requirements on the depressed areas in the cities. This study has been prepared from the example of Antakya urban area in order to understand urban regeneration and to have an idea about its main function. The main purpose of this study is to reveal the urban problems and to show how much it needs urban transformation. In order to achieve this aim, data collection methods used in qualitative research were used in our study. While the theoretical parts of the study were prepared by using written documents and documents analysis method, the pre-prepared and structured `interview paper` was used in the field research section. In this respect, the questions in the structured `interview paper, were directed to the experts of the Provincial Directorate of Environment and Urbanization of Hatay and the experts in the units responsible for urban transformation in Hatay Metropolitan Municipality, Antakya Municipality and Defne Municipality, as well as local civil society organizations officials and academicians. It was tried to determine the level of urban transformation. At the end of the study, the data obtained through theoretical and application methods were evaluated together and recommendations were developed in the light of the findings.KEY WORDSUrban, Urbanization, Urban Regeneration, Antakya Metropolitan Area.
