Obesity is a disease that results from the excessive adipose tissue in the body. It's one of the most important health problem of the century that adversely affects the longevity and quality of life. This thesis study was conducted between October and December 2015 in the secondary schools in the Province of Sivas, Turkey, in order to determine the prevalence of diathesis, overweigh and obesity as well as determining the risk factors that can lead to obesity. The study population consisted of 23716 students studying at the secondary schools in the city center of the Province of Sivas in the 2015-2016 academic year. In the study, the prevalence of obesity was taken considered 20%, and the sample size was calculated as 1124 students, with 3% of the degree of freedom and 99% confidence level. The questionnaire and anthropometric measuraments were applied in 7 schools, selected randomly among various socioeconomic neighborhoods. Of the 1124 students, 949 (84.4%) completed the questionnaires and included in the study. After classifying the BMI values of students in accordance with the percentile chart developed by Neyzi et al. for Turkish children, the prevalence of diathesis, overweight and obesity was found to be 7.5%, 12.1%, 11.2% respectively. In our study, the prevalence of obesity was significantly higher in those having a higher level of socioeconomic status. The prevalence of obesity was found to be significantly higher in students who have overweight parents or siblings, use computer for more than 1 hour a day, have breakfast irregularly and who consume milk, dairy products and fruit and vegetable less than 5 servings a week. As a result, it is observed that the incidence of obesity is increasing in Sivas as in other regions of the Turkey and throughout the world. For prevention, an effort should be made to help children and families adopt a balanced diet habit and healthy l,festyle.
