The sailing vessels, which had been an important vehicle of mercantilist capitalism until 19th century, by transforming into steamships, became an indispensable international trade vehicle of industrial capitalism since the Industrial Revolution. As the industrial production increased, the existence of steam-operated shipping companies became a necessity. In fact, these companies turned out to be the symbols of the power of states. The steamship owners/merchants, who fell short of meeting the raw material and market needs of the European industry due to the industrial boom, formed the marine shipping companies in partnership with the states. French joined the steam-operated marine shipping competition, which was initially formed in Europe by the state –private sector partnership led by Britain and Austria, with the Messageries Maritimes Company. For the initial periods, the main reason behind the establishment of the company was to establish a regular postal and industrial link between the port cities in Mediterranean and Black Sea and Marseilles. The later aim was to expand its operations to overseas colonies, depending on its success in these regions. At the end of the 19th century, the company played an important role in the French colonial history realizing all these objectives. In the period between 1851 and 1914, in which Messageries Maritimes Company was active in Ottoman port cities, French imperialism and interests found the opportunity to spread and settle in Ottoman State. The company had a significant place in mail, passenger and commodity traffic not only between Ottoman port cities and France but also among the Ottoman port cities. Almost all Ottoman port cities and hinterland attracted the interest of French Imperialism. The activities of Messageries Maritimes Company in Ottoman waters also influenced the Ottoman-French political interaction. In this period, the socio-economic, religious, institutional and urban structure of Ottoman State transformed as well. This study, attempted to scrutinize the transformation that Ottoman State experienced in the second half of 19th century from a company-centred perspective.Anahtar Kelimeler: Messageries Maritimes Company, Port cities of Ottoman, Maritimes, Colonialism, Imperialism.
