iiiABSTRACTIn the present study, effects of vesicular arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (VAM)application, on plant growth of melon, and against Fusarium wilt disease caused byFusarium oxysporum f.sp. melonis (FOM), which is one of the most importantproblems in melon production, were investigated. Primarily, in order to find out themycorrhizal fungus species indicating best interaction with melon plants, 5 Glomusspecies, G. caledonium, G. clarum, G. etunicatum, G. intraradices, G. mossae andthe mixture containing these five species were inoculated to melon. According toroot colonization rates of the fungus species, besides shoot and root lengths and dryweights of melon plants, G. etunicatum was selected to be used in the rest of thestudy. As a result of the pot experiment, it was found that G. etunicatum increasedshoot and root lengths and dry weights of melon plants and decreased wilt diseaseseverity of Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. melonis inoculated plants. In greenhouseexperiment, G. etunicatum application caused no significant difference among plantgrowth parameters, but it significantly decreased wilt disease severity caused by thepathogen. G. etunicatum caused 33.4 % decrease in wilt disease severity in the potexperiment and 33.3 % decrease in the greenhouse experiment. It was also found thatpathogen inoculation caused 10 and 18 % decrease in the root colonization ratios ofthe mycorrhizal fungus, respectively in greenhouse and pot experiments. Thesefindings suggested that G. etunicatum may be used against Fusarium oxysporum f.sp.melonis infections on melon plants.Key Words: Cucumis melo, Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. melonis, Glomus spp.biological control.
