Reduced grip strength and dexterity of hand may occur due to involvement ofhand joints in patients with hand OA.Seventy-seven patients with hand OA and 81 healthy controls were participatedin this study for searching the effects of hand osteoarthritis on hand strength, handfunctions, dexterity and daily life activities of post-menopausal women. Demographicdata of patients was recorded. Pain was assessed with Likert pain scale. Node andtender joint counts was recorded. AP radiograph of hands were performed for allcases. Radiologic assessment was performed according to Kellgren and Lawrenceclassification. Grip and pinch strength of both hands was tested with Jamardynamometer and manual pinchmeter. Manual dexterity was tested with GroovedPegboard Test. Hand functional disability was tested with DHI and JTHFI. Quality oflife was measured by using HAQ.There were no significant differences between demographic features ofgroup 1 and 2 (p>0.05). Node and tender joint counts was higher in group 1 thangroup 2 (p<0.001). HAQ and DHI scores, severity of pain and radiographic gradewere higher in group 1 than group 2 (p<0.05). The grip and pinch strengths werelower in the patient group (p<0.05). The hand grip strength was found to be affectedby the radiographic grade of the disease. Grooved Pegboard Test and JTHFT wereprolonged compared to controls (p<0.001). DHI was found to be affected by lateralpinch strength, JTHFT by grip and pinch strength, HAQ score by tender joint countand hand grip strength, Grooved pegboard test by age (p<0.05).In the present study, grip and pinch strength was reduced, hand function andquality of life was negatively affected in post-menopausal patients with hand OA. Forthis reason, patients must be followed closely and they must be informed aboutassistive devices which protect the joints and facilitate daily life activities. Keywords: Function, Grip, Hand, Osteoarthritis, Quality of life.
