The purpose of this study is to determine Brazil's hegemonic aspirations in the region through explaining its regional integration projects. However, Brazil's strategy towards regions' states and relations with them in order to become global power has been examined during this thesis. In the first part, it has been argued Brazil's attempts to become global power such as democratization process and economic liberalization. In this concept, this thesis discusses especially Brazil's foreign policy in the last two decades, covering the beginning of the 1990s until 2010, using Miriam Pyrs's categorization of hegemons. In this categorization, it has been chosen `regional hegemon` role for Brazil's status in the region. Furthermore, the study gives an extended research about Brazil's capabilities and relations within the region. Using these capabilities and setting up valuable relations with neighboring states, Brazil has proposed some important projects in the context of regional integration process. The most shining projects in terms of regional integration process are MERCOSUR (The Southern Common Market) and later UNASUR (Union of South American Nations) in recent years. These projects helped to consolidate Brazil's hegemonic aspirations in the region and also facilitate to open beyond the region. Giving these projects examples and others, this study highlights `the regional hegemony` assumed by Brazil in South America. Using neo-functionalism approach, I conclude that regional integration process facilitate the togetherness of South Nations, lead by Brazil. This process makes them closer which aims to combine their economic and political interests. This thesis hopes to recommend that Brazil's strategy of avoiding risks and coercive methods has created a good alternative for all South America and facilitated Brazil's global power status in the international world.
