In this thesis, the performance of video processing technique to measure precision displacements and its integration ability to interferometric systems were investigated. As an application the system is applied to the measurement of thermal expansion of metal samples.Michelson Interferometer setup was used in our studies due to its advantages in precision displacement measurements, since Michelson Interferometer gives a visual output called interferogram and it is much more convenient to analyse a visual output using visual processing techniques. Therefore in our studies interferograms containing displacement information were taken as our video signals to be processed. We used MATLAB/Simulink software to develop our programme, since this software provides fast and flexible solutions to the programmer by means of convenient toolboxes for video processing. The developed programme was first tested on a model interferogram video signal to understand the adequacy of the software and the hardware we developed. After beleiving that the developed software and hardware were working perfectly, the real interferograms obtained from our experimental setup were analysed. Thermal expansion of metal samples were measured as precise as micrometer scale. The results were compared with the theoretical results and relative error of %0.3 has been achieved. The linear thermal expansion coefficient of Aluminum was calculated as and for copper as using proposed video processing system.Based on our results it is concluded that the video processing technique is a much more convenient method than conventional electronic fringe counting technique.Video processing technique eliminates also extra electronic component used for electronic counting method.Futhermore, the developed programs using the advantages of the features of MATLAB/Simulink and Labview software provides us visual outputs at every stage of the analysis. This allows us to see the processes step by step. Therefore this system can be used by academic institutions for scientific educational purposes in teaching interferometers, thermal expansion of materials and fringe counting methods.
