This thesis deals with the concepts of identity and in the context of museums. The purpose of the thesis is to investigate the influence of the museums on the formation and sustainablity of the identities and the urban historical sense of belonging. The evolution of the museum in the west and in Turkey has been analysed, some relevant concepts are discussed within the modern and postmodern discourses and the literature on the subject. These concepts have been materialised with the example of Tire museum, with in-depth interviews with the local historians, director of the museum and other people who work in the museum. The thesis offers some suggestions to improve this museum as a `city` musuem. The first part focuses on the idea of muıseum as an institution of modernity. With the transformation of the concepts like nationalisation, globalisation and urbanisation, museums started to become diverse. In this diversification, city museums became the result and symbol of the transformation from the nation to the community and from global to the local. The second part of thesis deals with memory building and creating the sense of belonging as functions of city museums in the modern urban societies. The role of city museums in becoming a citizen and the sustainability of the urban memory has been discussed. In addition to that, the power of museums as places of history writing and protectors of urban identity and memory has been mentioned. The third part focuses on the Tire City Museum, as an example which materialises the concepts of identity, represantation and belonging that constitute the conceptual framework of the thesis. Tire City Museum was formed with the intention to present the local and the traditional; but this thesis shows that Tire city museum does not focus on the cultural and urban changes and therefore it needs improvement in the sense of the formation of an urban memory.
