ABSTRACT Ph.D. Thesis COMPUTATION AND EXTRAPOLATION OF THE WAVE FIELD BY USING THE KIRCHHOFF APPROXIMATION ON THE ROUGH SURFACES Selma KADIO?LU ' Ankara University Graduate School of Natural and Applied Science Department of Geophysical Engineering Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Turan KAYHIAN In this study, the contribution of the reflected wave fields from any point to the other points along the rough subsurface was researched for computation of the wave field on the surface. For this aim, a series approximation, which was originally found by Maue (1949) and Meecham (1956), was obtained for the outward-directed normal derivative of the wave field on the rough subsurface by using the Kirchhoff integral according to the free surface (Dirichlet) boundary condition for P pressure wave. Then this series was transformed to the space-time domain. The mathematic expressions of the terms of the series approximation were generalized to verify computation easiness. The limits of the application of this approximation were researched. The outward-directed normal derivative of the wave field was computed by using the traditional Kirchhoff approximation and the series approximation including second term on the rough subsurface. These results were used in the Kirchhoff integral to compute the wave fields coming from the rough subsurface and finally the wave fields were computed by the Kirchhoff integral on a plane surface. In the applications, the effects of the second term and the greatness of the amplitude knowledge of the diffractions belonging to the extremity points were observed exactly on the wave field sections on the surface computed by using the series approximation for the rough subsurface models which have high slope and the directions of the surface slope changes frequently. Specially, the hyperbolas of the diffractions taken place by the maximum depth points in the narrow, steep and deep syncline structures were seen on the wave field sections computed by using the series approximation. The same hyperbolas couldn't be seen on the wave field sections computed by using the Kirchhoff approximation. It is thought that the computation of the wave field by using the series approximation in the Kirchhoff method gives an important contribution for the modeling of the narrow, steep and deep structures while it is known that all methods for computation of the wave field is inadequate for the narrow, steep and deep structures. Bu amaçla orjinali Maue (1949) ve Meecham (1956) tarafından bulunan, P basınç dalgası için serbest yüzey (Dirichlet) sınır şartına göre elde edilen Kirchhoff integrali kullanılarak düzgün olmayan arayüzey üzerinde dalga alanının dışa doğru normal türevinin seri yaklaşımı elde edildi. Daha sonra seri yaklaşım uzay-zaman ortamına aktarıldı. Sayısal hesaplama kolaylığı açısından seri yaklaşımın terimlerinin genel matematik ifadeleri verildi. Seri yaklaşımın uygulama limitleri araştırıldı. Kirchhoff yaklaşımı ve ilk düzen yüzey eğim katkı terimini içeren seri yaklaşım kullanılarak arayüzey üzerinde dışa doğru normal türev değerleri hesaplandı. Bu değerler düzgün olmayan arayüzeyden gelen dalga alanını hesaplamak için Kirchhoff integralinde kullanıldı ve son olarak düzlem yüzey üzerinde Kirchhoff integrali ile dalga alanları hesaplandı. Uygulamalarda, eğimi büyük olan ve eğim yönü sık değişen arayüzey modelleri için yüzeyde seri yaklaşım ile hesaplanan dalga alanı kesitlerinde, arayüzey üzerinde yansıyan dalga alanlarının yüzey eğim etkileri açıkça gözlendi. Ayrıca saçılma genlik bilgisinin daha büyük olduğu görüldü, özellikle dar, dik ve derin senklinal yapılarında maksimum derinlik noktalarının meydana getirdikleri saçılma hiperbolleri belirgin olarak görüldü. Aynı yapılar için Kirchhoff yaklaşımı ile hesaplanan dalga alanı kesitlerinde saçılma hiperbolü görülemedi.
