This study was carried out to determine the potentials of eight different zones in Erzurum and its close proximity, which include distinct vegetation types, for flora tourism between December 2005 and October 2008. Areas corresponding important vegetation diversity in each zone were determined via field surveys in the respect of natural grassy and woody plant species. Natural and cultural reserve values of each area were determined and SWOT assessment was performed for the determination of flora tourism potentials. Rural landscape values of eight different zones were determined using visual landscape quality assessment method. In addition, in the study a questionnaire survey was conducted in order to determine the public awareness of flora tourism considering the fact that it may direct the future flora tourism studies.Among the zones included in the study, it was the route of Erzurum-Tortum-Uzundere which received the highest scores from participants in the visual quality assessment of landscape characteristics. The same zone was determined to have the largest flora tourism potentials with its 150 plant species, which were detected during the field surveys and attract attentions for their visual aspects. It was also found in the study that the zone including Palandoken Mountains, which was given the highest scores in the visual landscape quality assessment for ?plant diversity? parameter, has 51 plant species, which attract attentions for visual aspects, and has efficient flora tourism potentials since it is nearly 5 km far from the city centre, well-known for its ski resort and can serve as a winter sports and congress centre with the modern facilities and hotels. Additionally, another attractive zone in the study was determined to be Kuzgun Dam Pond and its surrounding with its plant diversity in addition to forests and landscape characteristics based on water and rural settlements, which has an important flora tourism potential with 62 plant species attracting attention for visual aspects at nearly 2000 m height. It was found that eight zones in the study had efficient reserve values providing opportunities to expand tourism season to all year based on flora tourism, various eco-turizm activities. By evaluating the findings some suggestions were proposed related to flora tourism planning.
