As there was in other Turkish-Islamic states, for the solution of the religious matters in Ottoman Empire, muftis were employed and gradually the head-mufti who was in the capital city was called as Shaykh al-Islam. The institution of Shaykh al-Islam which is thought to have been estabished during the reign of Murad 2nd as a bureaucratic institution , as the highest authority of the Ulema class, the Shaykh al-Islams had a significant influence and activity over the state and the society and this institution gained a significant influence especially with Zenbilli Ali Efendi, Kemalpaşazade ve Ebussuud Efendi. However, in the 17th century, the detoriation of İlmiye organization had a negative impact over the instituition of Shaykh al-Islam; the Shaykh al-Islams got out of their aim of foundation by intervening in politics, therefore they caused the degeneration of the institution. This situation resulted in their frequent dismissal and even their murders. In the Ottoman Empire although the Ulema class is out of political-slay, the murder of Shaykh al-Islams who had a significant influence over both the state and society as the highest authority of the Ulema Class supplies a reasonably interesting situation. Islamic law gave the president the authority to rule the death penalty. The Ottoman sultans used their power highly as based on their savings of customs and applied to the fatwas of the scholars. The sultans had many reasons over the politically slay; this includes especially the political crimes. The attempts of dethrone and to question the legitimacy of the sultan of the Ottoman Empire who is the absolute ruler of the state are the clear causes of `politically-slay?. It is clear to see that the victim Shaykh al-Islams were killed as a result of such a venture. In the Ottoman Empire, there are three Shaykh al-Islams who were killed with the order of the Sultans. For example: Ahîzade Hüseyin Efendi (1634) during the reign of IV. Murad, Hocazâde Mes?ud Efendi (1656) during the reign of IV. Mehmed and Feyzullah Efendi (1703) during the reign of III. Ahmed were killed with the ordinance of the sultan. Ahizâde Hüseyin Efendi and Hocazâde Mes?ud Efendi were killed with the crime of `Padişah-ı hal? and Feyzullâh Efendi was killed because of the misuse of his influence over the sultan.Key Words: Ottoman Empire, Shaikh al-İslam, siyaseten katl, Ahizâde Hüseyin Efendi, Hocazâde Mes?ud Efendi, Seyyid Feyzullâh Efendi.
