For its being the first opposition party of the Turkish Political Background,Progressivist Republican Party is an important step in the History of TurkishDemocracy. The party was an organization which was formed for the purpose ofopposing by military and civilian leaders who played significant roles duringNational Struggle period and whose views apperantly got more and more varied oncethe revolutions started. Progressivist Republican Party, which was unable to show itsopposition clearly to Mustafa Kemal who had a great authority on public as aliberator after the Independence War, directed its opposition directly to People?sParty, which also meant opposing Mustafa Kemal indirectly.Progressivist Republican Party strived for exercising the political powerwithin the State. When-due to the acts of some of its parliament members and to theactions of some of its supporters- it was thought to be harmful both for the State andthe regime, the Party was closed. The Sheikh Sait Riot was thought to have stemmed from the opposition andthe negative propaganda of Progressivist Republican Party and of the Press whichsupported the views of the Party. After assessing the conditions within the country,ivAtatürk and his friends came to a point where they had to to make a choice betweendemocracy and the revolutions; and they stood up for the revolutions. In other words, while striving to help the country have a national-secular structure, the negativeeffects of an opposition of this nature were found out; and ,accordingly, it wasthought reasonable to continue with a single-party administration for the success ofthe revolutions.Owing to its being an example for the forthcoming developments inTurkish Political Life, Progressivist Republican Party is of an important place in theHistory of Turkish Democracy.
