Aim: In this study, the effects of short-term progestagen and melatonin implants on the stimulation of ovarian activity and some of the reproductive parameters were investigated in anoestrus ewes out of the breeding season. Material and Method: Three years old 105 Kivircik ewes and four rams were used as material. The ewes were randomly divided into three groups. Eighteen mg melatonin (Reguline) was implanted to ewes in group I (n=40). After 35 days following implantation, teaser rams were introduced and ewes with oestrus symptoms were selected and inseminated. In group II (n=40) vaginal progesterone sponges (60 mg MPA) were inserted for 7 days and 350 IU PMSG was applied on the withdrawal day. After that rams were introduced and ewes in oestrus were inseminated. The ewes in group III (n=25) were saved as control. Rams were gathered in control group on the same day with the other groups. Four rams were also implanted with three implants (total 54 mg melatonin) by the same way. Blood samples were collected 3 different times starting from the first implantation/insertion time from all animals in treated groups. Plasma progesterone concentrations were determined in all blood samples by the method ECLIA. Results: Oestrus rates, degrees of estrous behavior, pregnancy rates and lambing rates were not significantly different between MEL and KSS groups (P > 0.05). Values obtained from the control group remained at very low levels compared with MEL and KSS groups (P < 0.001). Maximum progesterone concentrations were reached between day 8 and 20 among ewes of KSS and MEL groups and differences were not significant between groups (P>0.05).Conclusion: In conclusion, the ovarian activities of Kivircik ewes out of the breeding season can be stimulated with melatonin or short-term progesterone sponge implantations. Also higher pregnancy rates can be provided melatonin and short-term progesterone treated ewes during the non-breeding season. In addition, melatonin application is more effective than sponge application in terms of pregnancy rates and the effectiveness of progesterone. Moreover, both applications would be useful to improve the pregnancy rates in ewes that are in the non-breeding season. Keywords: Anoestrus, Ewe, Melatonin, Short-term progesteron, Synchronization.
