Özet

This master's thesis examines how Ibn Sīnā treats the issue of the four elements in his al-Kawn wa-l-fasād (Generation and Corruption), the third book in his philosophy of nature collection. It is divided into three parts: (1) a brief mention of how the early philosophers viewed the emergence of the universe and the arche problem; (2) a detailed analysis of Ibn Sīnā's presentation of the arguments against, and his defense of, his theory; (3) a brief introduction to the elements and generation-corruption problem, followed by a discussion of the differences between his views on that problem and transformation. After the difference is identified, the problem is then analyzed in terms of mixture and growth. Thus, before constructing the qualities and the four-elements theory, those of its aspects that differ from the theories of transformation, mixing, and growth are distinguished; his views on the four elements and their qualities are introduced, four criticisms of his theory are considered, and his responses to them are noted. The study concludes by mentioning the issues associated with the elements' transformation into each other and the effect of heavenly bodies upon them.Key Words: Ibn Sīnā, natural philosophy, generation and corruption, (al-kawn wa al-fasād), transformation, arche, four elements, al-anāṣir al-arbaʿa, (earth, water, air, and fire).
